Muslim poet and journalist in line for award

A Bristol journalist and NUJ member is one of three finalists for a prestigious award from The Muslim News newspaper.

Iqbal Tamimi, Editor-in-Chief at Palestinian Mothers Network for Human Rights, has reached the shortlist for the Ibn Battuta award for excellence in media.

The Ibn Battuta award is given for fair, accurate and balanced reporting on an issue involving Muslims nationally or internationally.

Ms Tamimi has studied at the the University of the West of England in Bristol.

She is also one of the volunteer supporters of Radio Salaam Shalom – a unique internet radio station based in Bristol designed to unite the Jewish and Muslim communities which has thousands of followers across the world.

Ms Tamimi, a poet and journalist of 17 years’ experience, will visit London on March 15 for the gala awards night attended by Home Secretary Alan Johnson, Shadow Home Secretary Chris Grayling and Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg.

The Muslim News is the largest independent Muslim newspaper in Britain, which in its 17-year history has attempted to share the experiences of Muslims as the community carves out its place in society.
