A LONG-STANDING member of Bristol NUJ has achieved a major ambition after years of struggle to find a place of safety – she has been awarded British citizenship.
Sabrina Esuka was a well-known presenter on television in the Democratic Republic of Congo until she was imprisoned an eventually had to flee the country 12 years ago.
She arrived in the UK as a refugee and had to fight for seven years as an asylum-seeker for the right to remain in the country.
After a legal battle lasting years, first for her right to live in the UK and then for citizenship – which will at last give her the chance to get a passport, meaning she can travel abroad and meet members of her family for the first time in more than a decade.
Sabrina had made many friends in Bristol NUJ and has contributed as a volunteer to several organisations including Ujima Radio and BCFM.
Several of her colleagues from Bristol NUJ were with her on November 10 when she was presented with her citizenship certificate by the Lord Mayor of Bristol, Jeff Lovell.
Sabrina is always immaculately dressed and even the Lord Mayor in his official robes remarked that he had been outshone.
