STUDENT journalists at UWE were urged this week to put their work forward for the Bristol NUJ award scheme as the final prize to last year’s students was presented.
Jade Evans was presented with her cheque for £50 as the winner of the Level 1 prize in the 2016 competition.
Every year Bristol NUJ awards £50 to the creator of the best student journalism in each of the four year groups, including MA level.
Bristol NUJ chair Paul Breeden told a group of first year journalism students that several of the judges had remarked that the standard in every year group was noticeably higher this year.
He urged the students to concentrate on the basis of their craft, which amounts to finding and communicating good stories – whatever medium is used to transmit them, whether it is print, online or broadcast.
He also urged the students to think carefully about joining the NUJ, which he described as the biggest and best network for media workers in Bristol and across the country.
Student membership is only £30 for the duration of the entire course. Once graduated, students automatically qualify for temporary freelance membership and receive a 50 per cent discount on their first year of membership. Student members who start full-time employment once they have finished their studies get a 25 per cent discount on their first year of full membership.
