The Bristol Cable is running a local event on 1st March 2018 assessing the present state of local journalism. The event will run between 6.30pm and 9.30pm at Hamilton House, in Bristol’s Stokes Croft district, and features Gareth Davies, a veteran local journalist who used to be employed by The Croydon Advertiser but who now works for the Bureau of Investigative Journalism. The event, entitled ‘The Crisis and Future of Local Media’ will assess and discuss the current state of local journalism in the UK.
“It is well known that there is a crisis in local journalism” said the Cable in its publicity material for the event, “but how did we get here? Why does it matter? What’s happening now and can we get out of it?”
Gareth Davies has regularly criticised the decline of locally-based journalism across the country, following his departure from The Croydon Advertiser, due to redundancy, in 2016. He has won three regional press awards for his work and also became well-known for his successful two-year legal battle against police after being issued with a ‘prevention of harassment notice’ merely for doing his job as a journalist.
This event is being co-hosted with UWE Journalism and Bristol branch of The National Union of Journalists (Bristol NUJ). It is a free event organised as part of the Cable Media Lab 2018 programme. However, tickets are limited, so if you want one, obtain your free place here.
