The Centre for Investigative Journalism (CIJ), which has partnered with the Bristol Cable, is running its Summer Conference in June this year, to be held at London University’s Professor Stuart Hall Building between 28th and 30th June. The event is the UK’s only investigative journalism training event with an emphasis on teaching investigative skills. A mixture of talks, demos and hands-on classes are on offer, designed to equip journalists and anyone interested in investigations with up-to-date investigative methods and tools.

“Attending the CIJ Summer School has been a formative experience for me as someone interested in investigative journalism, in terms of the hands on sessions, fascinating talks, debates and networking opportunities” said Adam Cantwell-Corn, a journalist at the Bristol Cable. “Highly recommended for any aspiring muck rakers”.

Mr Cantwell-Corn added that if the sessions being held at the conference this year are of interest to people who cannot attend the actual event, he is happy to organise a training event in Bristol.

Speakers at the event this year include Matthew Caruana Galizia, the son of the Maltese journalist and anti-corruption activist Daphne Caruana Galizia who was assassinated in a car bomb attack in October 2017. Matthew is a journalist and software engineer who is investigating his mother’s murder.

Stéphane Horel and Stéphane Foucart are winners of the European Press Prize for their investigation into Monsanto while Miranda Patrucic is an award winning journalist at the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project.

Gavin Millar is a QC at Matrix Chambers, based in London and Geneva.

Aron Pilhofer is the James B. Steele Chair in Journalism Innovation at Klein College of Media and Communication at Temple University.

The Buzzfeed Investigative Team, consisting of Alex Campbell, Jane Bradley and Tom Warren are also speaking, among others yet to be confirmed.

Topics to be discussed include science journalism, data journalism, financial journalism (including offshore matters), access to information laws, covert filming and much more.

Bursaries are available for those from British Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds who may not be able to afford the participation fees.

Details of fees and how to book a place are available here.
